Although CEPH X-Rays may be taken intermediately throughout orthodontic treatment to view progress, these x-rays are usually only taken before and after orthodontic treatment. CEPH X-Rays are extraoral, so patients do not have to insert any sort of trays, bitewings or films into the mouth.
CEPH X-Rays are safe, fast, painless and extremely effective. Focusing on the patient’s side profile, the CEPH X-Ray only takes about 10 seconds to capture the x-ray and five to six minutes to develop the final image. Once the image is ready, the patient’s smile can be “traced” in order to calculate how his or her jaw and surrounding bone will respond to orthodontic treatment. By tracking each patient’s individual smile, our orthodontist can determine a specialized, custom treatment plan. Orthodontists find CEPH X-Rays particularly helpful because they are able to predict the overall success of orthodontic treatment.
In addition to orthodontic treatment, CEPH X-Rays are commonly used to:
- Diagnose broken or cracked teeth and/or jaw fractures
- Explore TMJ symptoms
- Obtain exact measurements of teeth and/or root structures
- Assess both overbites and underbites
